Family sources confirmed the news of Donna Summer’s death today but there was no specific detail as to the nature of her death.

Premiliminary investigation shows that Ngubane,55, kills himself by firing a fatal shot through his mouth.He was found in a pool of his blood by his wife and daughter when they arrived home.

When Sunday Vanguard called Muyiwa Ige, the son of the former minister, who is the Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning in Osun State, he confirmed his uncle’s death but added that he did not have the details. Muyiwa Ige said, “I can confirm that he is dead.

But that is all that I can tell you for now. I heard that he slumped and died while trying to deliver a birthday speech. I am on my way to Ibadan. I can’t say much until I get to his residence.’’ When he was called about an hour later, he said, “But I can say that his death marked the end of a lineage of Ige family because he was the last man.” When asked further what could have killed Sir Ige, he added, “ I am just getting to Ibadan now from Osun State. All I was told was that he slumped at my cousin’s birthday, Akin Ige.

He slumped when he stood up to speak. That is what I have for now. I will soon go to his residence and see things for myself”. Akin Ige was said to be celebrating his 60th birth anniversary in Ibadan when the incident happened. When he slumped, the late Ige, was said to have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he was confirmed dead.

In a statement at the weekend by the FIRS Director of Communications and Liaison Department, Mr. Emmanuel Obeta, the agency said the enforcement drive, led by an Assistant Director of Legal and Prosecution Department, Mr. Abu Stephen, is aimed at recovering arrears of taxes accruing to the government from Company Income Tax (CIT), Education Tax (EDT), Withholding Tax (WHT) and Value Added Tax (VAT).

He said the FIRS served many notices on the companies to pay their outstanding tax liabilities or be compelled to do so.

The statement added that the companies and their liabilities are: Pivot Engineering Limited, N609,911,992:36; Reliance Telecommunications Limited, N592,756,627:00; HITV Limited, N309,500,065:55; and UTC Nigeria Plc, N277,589,163:74

Others are: Sweet Sensation Confectionary Limited, N155,483,013:00; Entertainment Highway Limited, N197,444,964:55 and John Holt Nigeria Limited, N33,073,487:52.

The statement reads: “However, some of the companies had admitted their outstanding tax liabilities when the enforcement team called at their offices. For instance, Mr. Opedemowo Olayemi, the Chief Accountant of Sweet Sensation Confectionary Limited, said the company was owing N60 million for VAT alone.

“Also, Mr. Dada Arokoyu of UTC and Mr. Muyiwa Fojude of Pivot agreed that their companies had outstanding tax liability to settle with the FIRS.

“Similarly, when the team visited HITV Ltd, Entertainment Highway Ltd and Reliance Communications Ltd, their offices were under lock and key, but security at the gates attended to the enforcement team.

“At HITV and Entertainment the team was told that the GTBank sealed off the premises following a court order. Reliance Communication was sealed upon the directive of the Chairman of the company.

“The arrest is a warning to other organisations and individuals on the need to ensure deductions and remittance of their tax obligation as provided by Part V1, Section 40 of the FIRS Establishment Act 2007.

It states: “Any person who, being obliged to deduct any tax under this act or the laws listed in the First Schedule to this Act, but fails to deduct or having deducted, fails to pay to the Service within 30 days from the date the amount was deducted or the time the duty to deduct arose, commits an offence and shall, upon conviction, be liable to pay the tax withheld or not remitted in addition to a penalty of 10 per cent of the tax withheld or not remitted per annum and interest at the prevailing Central Bank of Nigeria minimum re-discount rate and imprisonment for period of not more than three years.’’

Jimoh Ibrahim

Jimoh Ibrahim, a Nigerian billionaire,politician and chairman of Air Nigeria is very excited at the moment. Air Nigeria (formerly Virgin Nigeria) just took delivery of its much awaited A300-200 aircraft.

The flight is to serve the purpose of flying passengers from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport to London airport. Ibrahim and the MD of Air Nigeria flew on board the airport to Lagos via Egypt some hours ago.The arrival of the aircraft was marked with a  short ceremony. The first passenger flight has been scheduled for wednesday.

Known as ‘Mr. Risk Taker’, Mr. Ibrahim is also a motivational speaker and publisher of Newswatch magazine.

The university in a statement on Sunday, confirmed that Sofoluwe died of cardiac arrest.

The statement explained that Sofoluwe suffered a heart attack while in his office at the Department of Computer Science on Friday night but managed to call his doctor who came to his rescue and brought him to the institution’s Medical Centre in an ambulance.

The deceased, the university added, was subsequently transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba where he was diagnosed as having Myocardial Infarction.

Myocardial infarction refers to a situation whereby a blood clot stops blood from flowing in a heart (coronary) artery

“He was resuscitated before being transferred to the High Dependency Unit in Ward E8 of LUTH. Unfortunately, he suffered a second heart attack and all efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Post mortem examination has since been carried out and this has confirmed the cause of death to be of Cardiac Origin,” the statement added.

The statement added that the university had declared three days of mourning in honour of Sofoluwe, the 10th VC of UNILAG

According to a statement, the mourning period will run from Monday (today) till Wednesday.

During the mourning period, all lectures, statutory meetings and other university activities at its three campuses (Akoka, Yaba and Idi-Araba, including its staff schools) will not hold.

The university has also set up a burial committee headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Research) Prof. Babajide Alo.

Stella Oduah

The Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, has said that the second phase of the ongoing airport remodelling exercise will commence on June 1, 2012.

The minister, who said the first phase of the remodelling exercise, comprising 11 airports, would be completed soon, also said the airports renovated would be inaugurated before the end of May.

She spoke on Saturday during a tour of some of the renovated airports.

Some of the airports being remodelled in the first phase are the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Nnamdi Azikiwe Intenational Airport, Abuja; Owerri Airport; Yola Airport and Benin Airport.

Oduah said, “We are starting the second phase on June 1. The first phase has commenced. We have done more than 85 per cent of work on the airport.

“From the end of this month, we are going to start the unveiling and inauguration of the projects. Construction is a long process because the foundation has to be right. We have gone a very long way.”

The minister said the remodelling would help to upgrade the quality of services being rendered at airports across the country.

According to her, the projects are being strictly monitored to ensure that contractors do not deliver substandard jobs.

She said, “We have our quality control group working with the contractors at all times; we want to make sure we don’t play with users’ safety, which is why we are doing total restructuring and remodelling.

“What we are doing goes beyond remodelling of the airports, we are actually doing restructuring and reconstructing of the airports. As you have seen, we are just starting to go round the airports. We are doubling the sizes of those terminals and changing all the facilities and utilities within the airports. So, you can’t call that remodelling, it is restructuring and reconstructing.”

“That is what we are doing to ensure that passengers have safety mode of transportation and we want to ensure that passengers have value for their money, and most importantly, we want every Nigerian and stakeholders to be proud of our airport environments. It is a total transformation of the aviation sector,” she added.

Oduah, however said that one of the challenges facing her was the accusation by stakeholders of being sidelined in the transformation programme of the airports.

She alleged that those benefiting from the degradation of the industry were the ones kicking against any form of progress that the ministry aimed to achieve.

She said, “I am always perplexed when I hear some stakeholders saying they have been excluded. I don’t know who is a stakeholder and who is not a stakeholder. Every Nigerian is a stakeholder. I am a stakeholder; you are a stakeholder.
